Symbols and folders

Organize measurements with symbols and folders.

Written by Sarah Chen

Symbols and folders help you organize takeoff measurements into logical categories. Symbols represent individual measurement types with specific properties, while folders organize related symbols together.

Understanding symbols

A symbol is a named measurement type with its own appearance and properties. Each symbol includes a name, type (Count, Linear, or Area), color, and measurement value. When you create a measurement on the canvas, you are creating an instance of that symbol.

Symbol appearance varies by type. Count symbols have configurable dot shape and dot size. Linear symbols have line color, thickness, and dashed or solid style. Area symbols have fill color, opacity, and optional stripe patterns.

Creating symbols

Symbols are created automatically when you start a new measurement. Select a measurement tool, configure the symbol properties in the symbol panel (name, color, appearance), then click Start to begin drawing. The symbol appears in the sidebar when you complete your first measurement.

The symbol panel

The symbol panel appears when configuring a new symbol or editing an existing one. The header shows the color picker, name field, and action buttons. Below that, expandable sections let you configure dimensional properties like diameter, width, wall height, depth, slope, line style, stripe patterns, offset, and display unit.

Folders

Folders organize related symbols. They help structure your takeoff for easier navigation and reporting. Folders can be nested to create subfolders within folders.

To create a folder, expand the Takeoffs section in the sidebar and click the New folder button (the folder-plus icon) on that row. Enter a name and click Create.

Managing folders

Each folder row has a three-dot menu, shown on hover, with Rename and Delete. Deleting a folder moves its contents up to the parent level rather than deleting the symbols inside.

Managing symbols

To move a symbol into a folder, select it to open the symbol panel, open the three-dot menu in the panel header, and choose Move to.... The same menu includes Duplicate, which copies the symbol with all its properties and measurements, and Move to layer to reassign its layer. See Layers for more on organizing by layer.

To merge count symbols, Ctrl/Cmd+Click two or more count symbols in the sidebar, then click Merge in the floating bar that appears.

Visibility controls

Click the eye icon on any symbol row to hide or show it on the canvas. Hidden items remain in your takeoff data but do not display on the canvas.

Search and filter

Press / to focus the search field, and press Esc to clear it. Type a name to search all symbols in the project, regardless of the current folder, layer, or type filter. Use the filter bar below the toolbar to narrow the sidebar view by measurement type (Area, Linear, Count) or by layer.
