A line item represents a single cost component attached to a takeoff symbol. Each symbol can have multiple line items covering different cost types, and each line item uses a formula to calculate its quantity from the symbol's measurements.

Every line item has a cost type that categorizes what it covers.

In the line items table, each row shows its type with an icon. Click the Type cell to change it using the inline dropdown.

Open a symbol's line item editor to add items. The editor groups items into sections by cost type. Each section header has its own + button that adds a blank line item directly to that section.

To add items with AI instead, use the input field at the top of the editor. Type a description like "concrete pavers with base prep and labor" and the AI generates line items with appropriate formulas and cost types. AI generation uses credits, see Credits system.

Drag the grip handle on a line item to reorder it within its cost type.

In the project-wide Line items table, add a new row by scrolling to the bottom and typing into an empty row. The table auto-saves your edits.

Each line item has several pricing fields you can set.

Each line item carries its own currency. Set it from the currency selector on the Cost field in the editor, and amounts format in that currency throughout.

Set these fields directly in the line items table by clicking a cell, or in the expanded line item editor where you also configure formulas.

The Cost per unit cell marks rows that need attention. An amber warning icon means the item has no cost yet (Needs pricing). A sparkle icon means the price is an AI-estimated price you may want to verify. Rows with a catalog or manually entered price show no marker.

When items need attention, chips above the table show the counts, such as 3 need pricing or 5 AI-estimated prices. Click a chip to filter the table to exactly those rows. The toolbar's origin filter (All origins) offers the same narrowing by hand:

A missing cost is deliberate: the AI never invents a price it can't support, so an unpriced item is a to-do, not an error.

The Client option column marks a line item as optional work the client can choose to add on a shared bid. Click the checkbox in a row to toggle it. See Client options for how options appear to clients.

Formulas calculate quantity from takeoff measurements. A formula references built-in variables like [NetAreaSqFt], [NetLinearFt], or [Count] depending on the symbol type. You can combine variables with arithmetic for complex calculations.

Two additional fields refine the calculated quantity. Waste adds a percentage buffer for material loss. Round up to nearest rounds the quantity up to match how materials are sold, such as rounding to the nearest whole unit or case.

When adding or editing a line item, the Name field doubles as a product selector. Start typing to search your product lists, then select a product to inherit its pricing fields. Linked items show the product's SKU, cost per unit, unit of measure, and markup automatically.

If you type a name that does not match any product, it becomes a custom (unlinked) entry. You can also create a new product directly from the selector without leaving the editor.

The line items table works like a spreadsheet. Click any cell to edit, press Enter to confirm, the arrow keys to move between rows, Escape to cancel, and Tab to move between cells. Select multiple rows with checkboxes for batch deletion.

Filter the table by cost type using the Type dropdown in the toolbar. You can also filter by template pack using the leftmost toolbar dropdown (defaults to All templates) to see only line items from a specific pack.
